Moose Hunting For Ohio Trophy Hunters

For most Ohio hunters, from the cornfields of northwest Ohio to the forests of Southeast Ohio, moose hunting isn’t just rare, it’s impossible. Ohio has no native moose population, and sightings are nonexistent. That’s why more Ohio outdoorsmen are heading to Canada for a more impressive moose hunting experience. In Newfoundland, there are over 120,000 moose, and hunting zones boast an impressive 80%+ success rate. Our experienced guides give you a serious shot at a mature moose, with antlers reaching 40 to 60 inches across. An achievement you’ll remember long after returning to the familiar Ohio woods.

Step into a vast northern wilderness and take on one of North America’s greatest big-game challenges.

Black Bear Hunting for OHio Hunters

While black bears are gradually reclaiming parts of Ohio (especially in northeast and southeast Ohio), their population remains small (around 50 to 100), and hunting remains illegal since they are still state‑endangered. If you’ve been watching for that trophy bear near Akron or around Athens County, you won’t find a legal season there. That’s why Ohioans come north. With Garia Bay Outfitters, you’ll hunt in Canada’s largest black bear territory, where more than 10,000 bears roam. Our spring hunts (late May to June) give you a shot at a 300 to 600-lb mature bear under expert guidance in optimal conditions.

Sharpen your skills, make memories, and add a legendary trophy to your story.

Packages for Ohio Atlantic Salmon Anglers

Ohio’s warmer waters don’t support native Atlantic salmon, so serious anglers venture to Newfoundland. Garia Bay Outfitters connects Ohio fishermen with breathtaking cold-water rivers renowned for wild Atlantic salmon catches. These fish often exceed 20 pounds, and the remote settings make for solitude and peak fishing in pristine environments. If you’ve grown up chasing bass on Lake Erie or steelhead in tributaries, this is the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

We deliver more than a fishing trip; we deliver a bucket‑list experience!

FAQs From Our Ohio Hunters

We offer guided moose hunts, black bear hunts, and Atlantic salmon fishing trips, all held in Newfoundland. All tours are big-game opportunities you can’t get in Ohio.

  • Moose Hunting: Newfoundland is home to one of the densest moose populations in North America, offering Ohio hunters the chance to harvest massive moose weighing over 1,200 pounds and carrying antler lengths of up to 60 inches.
  • Black Bear Hunting: Hunters can expect to encounter black bears ranging from 300 to 500 pounds, with the possibility of landing exceptional trophies that exceed 600 pounds.

Moose hunts average 80 to 85% and black bear hunts 70 to 80% success rate during our guided hunts.

Ohio has zero natural or self-sustaining moose population, and black bears are classified as state‑endangered, making hunting them illegal to hunt.

Moose hunts often start in late September or October; black bear hunts peak late May to June; Atlantic salmon fishing runs from spring to early summer.

Yes, if you’re visiting Canada from Ohio for hunting or fishing, you are required to obtain the appropriate non-resident licenses and tags for each species you plan to pursue.

These licenses are issued by the province, in this case, Newfoundland and Labrador, and must be secured before your hunt or fishing trip begins. Garia Bay Outfitters assists all Ohio clients with this process to make sure you’re fully legal and compliant with provincial wildlife regulations. It’s also important to carry your license at all times while in the field, as conservation officers may request to see it during routine checks.

For more detailed information on bringing firearms into Canada, including the required forms, please refer to: Import and export a firearm or weapon into Canada

You can bring firearms into Canada for hunting, but they must meet the country’s non-restricted classification, and you’ll need to complete a temporary firearm import form (Form RCMP 5589) in advance or at the border.

We’ll walk you through the entire process to make it easy. For moose hunting, popular calibers like .300 Winchester Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, and similar high-powered rifles are recommended due to the size and durability of the animal. For black bears, hunters often choose reliable mid-to-large calibers like .30-06 Springfield or .30-30 Winchester.

Expect uneven ground, longer hikes, or spot-and-stalk hunting, remote cabins, river crossings, and changing weather conditions. The success rates are usually better than what you’ll find at home, and you’ll have a greater chance of seeing larger, more mature animals.

Since both the animals for hunting (moose and black bear) are illegal to hunt in Ohio, you’ll be able to achieve a trophy catch more easily than if you were back at home.

Fishing for Atlantic salmon in Newfoundland offers a completely different experience than anything available in Ohio. Unlike Ohio, where Atlantic salmon aren’t native and opportunities are extremely limited or non-existent, Newfoundland has wild, naturally reproducing populations in clean, fast-flowing rivers.

These fish are known for their size, strength, and the challenge they present, often weighing over 20 pounds and putting up an intense fight. The setting is also part of the draw. In this case, it’s remote, quiet, and untouched by heavy development.

This experience isn’t just about fishing, it’s about being immersed in one of the last truly wild places where Atlantic salmon still populate.
